The design of my space will be directly connected with the use of light. With using daylight as a prime element in the design, it will play a significant role in the character of the architecture. I started my design process with exploring the different ways natural light can enter a space by studying techniques used in daylighting in order to better understand the importance of carefully integrating light into architecture. To accurately create and manipulate shade and light in my project, I explored the effectiveness of a series of daylighting techniques. Daylight and sunlight will be at the heart of my final design, with also bearing in mind all of the other factors that need be considered in order to complete an holistic approach.

Sketches by Ellie Anderson

Through research I found that there are many factors that must be considered in the design of the building. The first is the siting of the building. The building's orientation, sun path and location of existing buildings or landscape should be taken into account. Because my sacred space is located in the mountains of Fairbanks, Alaska, the design should be respectful of the surrounding environment and climate responsive. I plan to draw on locally sourced and sustainable materials and use them in a inventive way. I will also consider the main function of the building, which is to serve as a remote place of sacredness to members of the local community and tourists. Bearing in mind the present and future needs of occupation, the dimensions of the space will also be an important decision to make.
